“It’s not whether you win or lose but how you play the game” –the old adage goes. Brian Domenico, President and CEO of POWER SHOWCASE International High School Home Run Derby, believes there is much more to the saying. Having experienced baseball at the professional level through his late teens and early twenties, Domenico values the importance of teaching athletes to recognize his/her potential as both an individual and a competitor. The POWER SHOWCASE blends Domenico’s unique teaching and coaching philosophy, which integrates both the physical fundamentals with the often-neglected mental aspect of the game, with a forum to allow the next generation of power hitters to highlight their skills in front of top talent evaluators.
A Rhode Island native and pitcher, Domenico attended Lincoln High School and graduated in 1991 before playing ball at Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts. Chosen by the Oakland Athletics in the 19th round of the 1992 Major League Draft, he later signed as a free agent with the Boston Red Sox organization in 1995. His professional career highlights include pitching the winning and final game of the Rookie League World Series for the Oakland Athletics in 1993 and earning two league championship rings. Domenico also played two years of independent ball for the Jackson Diamondkats and the Long Island Ducks organizations.
Following his playing career, Domenico took over as Head Varsity Baseball Coach at All-Star Academy (now American Heritage) in Delray Beach, Florida and is now employed concurrently as the Behavior Interventionist and Head Varsity Baseball Coach at Olympic Heights Community High School in Boca Raton. In 1997, Domenico lead the All-Star Academy Stallions, in their inaugural season, to a district championship and a regional quarter final play-off berth. In 2001, Domenico’s first year coaching at Olympic Heights, he was voted Boca-Delray “Coach of the Year.” Two years later, he led the Olympic Heights Lions to the school’s first ever Regional Final appearance and was once again, selected “Coach of the Year” by area coaches and sports writers. In 2009, Domenico collected his 100th victory as the Lions’ head coach. Domenico was nominated and voted into Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers – The Best Teachers in America in 2003.
As owner and operator of Game Face Baseball Camps, Inc., Domenico teaches student athletes the mental aspects of baseball, including on the field body language, breathing and relaxation techniques, simulation training, and visualization and imagery skills. Given his unique approach to the game, Domenico has been quoted in numerous publications, including Marc Shoenfelt’s book Baseball’s Forgotten Basics and several articles in Baseball America, one of the top and well-respected baseball only publications.
A fierce proponent of steroid-free baseball, Domenico has spoken out against the use of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. Quoted in Scholastic’s Science World magazine (March 28, 2005), Domenico believes that sports should be about class and integrity and character. “You have to earn the right to be successful,” Domenico says. To further his belief, Domenico has tested past POWER SHOWCASE World Champions for performance enhancing substances and has coined the phrase THE PURITY & POWER GENERATION® to indicate intolerance for use of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs in connection with his event.
Domenico has been interviewed by various sports radio and television programs regarding numerous baseball related topics, including interviews on Mike Healy’s Baseball Digest Live, Fox Sports and the Bright House Sports Network. Domenico’s career also includes a stint providing color commentary for the Oakland Athletics.
With over twenty years of baseball industry experience both on and off the field, Domenico started the POWER SHOWCASE home run derby in 2004. Now in its fifth year, the POWER SHOWCASE attracts the top power hitting prospects from around the world. Domenico and the POWER SHOWCASE were highlighted in baseball historian Bill Jenkinson’s recent publication Baseball’s Ultimate Power: Ranking the All-Time Greatest Distance Home Run Hitters.
Domenico attended Dean College and Lynn University and resides in Boca Raton, Florida. He has a seven year old son Jackson.
